How to Use This Book::

In preparation for the practice of medicine, medical students today are called upon to integrate the basic and clinical sciences, in some cases from the first month of their curriculum. Students are often expected to complete a selfdirected study before meeting with other students in problem-based learning groups.
This book showcases the integration of basic and clinical science necessary to prepare for medical practice. It presents the alterations of structure and function that underlie disease, along with appropriate diagnostics and
therapies.

The book is not intended to be an exhaustive review of each organ
system’s pathologies, but rather a learning model for integrated mastery of
USMLE Step 1 test systems.
The vignettes you will encounter represent the variety of core problems
arising in a given system. They should be thought of as case exercises; they do
not represent full clinical case presentations, but present enough information
to allow you to generate a broad differential diagnosis.
Each chapter in the book covers an organ system. The chapters may be read in
any order. To make the most of your study, we recommend the following:
First, as a self-test, review the 10 patient vignettes and do your best to
generate a differential diagnosis. As you consider your differential, keep
in mind the list of diseases for that organ system.
Then, work the chapters systematically. Begin with the checklist of
diseases affecting an organ system. Next, move to the chapter vignettes,
and then on to the disease discussions.
Disease discussions begin with a pathogenesis section that names the
correct diagnosis in the first sentence. Then the discussion moves on to
disease-specific clinical presentation, diagnostic studies, morphologic
findings, differential diagnosis, and treatment/outcomes along with
integrated physiology and pharmacology correlations.
Finally, test your knowledge of integration with the assessment
questions at the end.
